Often overlooked by tourists, Poznan has a lot to offer its visitors. As the fifth largest city in Poland (population wise) it is fairly unique when compared to other major cities in the country. Which isn’t surprising, given it is the birthplace of Poland. Containing a maze of pastel coloured buildings, a historic old town and plenty of cultural sites, Poznan has an exciting energy which you’ll feel on arrival. Poznan airport is conveniently located 5km from the city centre,which means it’s super convenient for travellers. Airlines such as RyanAir offer regular direct flights here.
There are plenty of nice spots for your stay whilst in Poznan. You can’t go wrong however staying as close to the old town as you can, simply so you can explore the history of the city. There are plenty of AirBnB’s available, but be mindful that many are managed by agents – so try to get a more authentic experience if you can. You need to visit the Old town and market square. Filled with excellent restaurants, cafes, bars and beautiful pastel painted buildings, it’s a lot to take in. Be sure to see the Town hall, built in the 14th century. Whilst you wander, you’ll explore the city’s history and whilst you’re at see how many street artworks by the famous homegrown artist Noriaki (still anonymous to this day).
When in Poznan, you need to try the local croissants. They make a special sweet croissant (or rogale swietomarcinskie) in honour of Saint Martin, a roman soldier who used to give croissants to the poor. Made into the shape of a horseshoe (to honour his horse), the recipe is legally protected by way of recognition by the EU as a Protected Geographical Indicator. This means they can only be made in the area, so it would be a shame not to try one really!
A great location for a few reasons is the Stary Browar. This once brewery turned cultural centre and shopping mall is a simply stunning place to visit. You can grab a bite to eat, do some shopping or visit the art gallery, all whilst taking in the stunning industrial architecture and features.
When visiting such a historical city as Poznan, it pays to take it in. Why not do so from one of the best views of the city from the Royal Castle? Take in the sites and you can even visit the gallery while you’re there.
There are two excellent venues you should definitely check out while you’re here. For an outdoor drink in a relaxing setting, head to Konternart; a collection of shipping containers turned into bars and food stores, with comfortable outdoor seating and regular live music. For jazz music and a more intimate setting, look no further than Klub Dragon. A popular spot with locals, it’s fun during the day and even more so at night.
