Cost of living

All teaching contracts are for 10 months and include flight reimbursement and accommodation or a housing allowance (*). The cost of living in China is relatively affordable, giving you the opportunity to enjoy your experience while saving part of your salary.

  • Average living costs: around 4,000 RMB per month
  • Accommodation: provided or covered by a housing allowance*
  • Potential savings: from around 4,000 RMB per month

With competitive salaries, great benefits and manageable living costs, teaching in China is an opportunity to gain international experience, discover a new culture and save money along the way.

(*) Shanghai Placements: Accommodation & Benefits

For Shanghai placements, schools offer a higher salary instead of free accommodation. Expect to pay around 2,500–3,500 RMB per month for shared accommodation or 4,000–5,000 RMB for a private place.

Your school will provide a hotel for your first week, giving you time to find accommodation with support from a local coordinator.

Shanghai placements also include additional benefits such as a semester bonus, health insurance and transport allowances.

Pre-Departure Budget

Before travelling to China, plan for initial costs such as your work visa, criminal record check, document authentication, flights, insurance and rental deposits. Budget approximately £3,000–£3,500 for Shanghai placements and £2,500–£3,000 for other locations.

The good news is that all placements include flight reimbursement, and some schools may also cover visa and document costs.

With a 4–6 month pre-departure process, you’ll have time to plan, save and spread out these expenses.

(*) Shanghai Placements: Accommodation & Benefits

All teaching contracts are for 10 months and include flight reimbursement and accommodation or a housing allowance (*). The cost of living in China is relatively affordable, giving you the opportunity to enjoy your experience while saving part of your salary.

  • Average living costs: around 4,000 RMB per month

  • Potential savings: from around 4,000 RMB per month

With competitive salaries, great benefits and manageable living costs, teaching in China is an opportunity to gain international experience, discover a new culture and save money along the way.

Airfare Contribution

As part of your teaching contract in China, many schools provide an airfare contribution to help with the cost of international travel from your home country (or your most recent country of residence) to China. Please note, this benefit is never paid before departure and is typically reimbursed upon arrival or later during your contract, depending on the school. The details should be outlined in your contract.

This contribution is designed to make your relocation smoother, with clear terms and coverage provided by your employer.

What additional costs should I expect?

Beyond the programme fee, our local partner estimates the following expenses in British pounds (GBP):

  • Documents and visa: criminal record check (£20–£25+), document legalisation (£350–£400+ for three documents) and work visa (approximately £160).
  • Flights: approximately £500–£600 one way. Flight reimbursement depends on your school contract.
  • Initial living expenses: at least £700 to cover spending before your first salary.
  • Housing: if your school does not provide free accommodation, budget approximately £600–£1,000 for the deposit and first month’s rent.
  • Other expenses: utilities (£20–£25/month), a SIM card (£10/month), passport photos and airport transport.

Travel insurance is strongly recommended (approximately £250+), along with an emergency reserve of £100–£200. Discuss any vaccination needs with your doctor.

These figures are estimates and vary by location, personal circumstances and school contract. Your school may reimburse some expenses. Wait for our local partner’s instructions before starting document legalisation or applying for your visa.

Do I need a visa?

Participants must have their TEFL certificate, degree certificate and a recent criminal background check authenticated so their school can arrange the documentation needed to apply for a Z work visa.

Our partner in China will guide you through the process of preparing for your move, including support with your work visa, criminal record check and document authentication.

The full pre-departure process usually takes around 4 to 6 months, giving you plenty of time to complete your TEFL course, prepare the required documents and get ready for your move to China.

What Is not Included?

The following expenses are not included in your TEFL programme fees:

Your overall expenses will depend on your personal preferences, accommodation choice, and how you spend your free time. You should also budget for everyday expenses such as snacks, drinks, toiletries, medication, social activities, and unexpected or emergency costs.
