As a TEFL teacher in South Korea, you can expect to earn between:

  • USD 20,000–25,000 per year
  • GBP 16,400–20,500 per year

How does this compare to the cost of living?

Living expenses in South Korea are relatively low compared to many Western countries. Monthly rent is already covered by your school, which removes one of the largest costs. Daily necessities such as food, transport, and entertainment are affordable — with most teachers able to live comfortably on their salary while still saving a significant portion each month. Many teachers report being able to save US $700–1,000 monthly, depending on lifestyle.

With excellent benefits and a manageable cost of living, teaching in South Korea offers you the opportunity not only to advance your career but also to enjoy an exciting cultural experience while saving money.

Airfare Contribution in South Korea

As part of your teaching contract in South Korea, many schools provide an airfare contribution to help with the cost of international travel from your home country (or your most recent country of residence) to South Korea. Please note, this benefit is never paid before departure and is typically reimbursed upon arrival or later during your contract, depending on the school. The details are always outlined in your employment contract.

  • Private Schools: One-way airfare contribution, usually capped at KRW 700,000–1,000,000
  • Public Schools: Return airfare contribution (two-way), with a fixed allowance of KRW 1,300,000
  • Scope: Applies only to international flights from your home country (or most recent travel leg), not domestic flights within South Korea

This contribution is designed to make your relocation smoother, with clear terms and coverage provided by your employer.

Accommodation

  • Orientation period: Included with TESOL/TEFL Course.
  • Course period: Not included, but facilitated, price is $450 for shared or $900 for private accommodation (Private is subject to availability)
  • Job placement period: Provided by the school.

Do I need a visa?

Obtaining a visa and work permit as a TEFL teacher in South Korea involves several steps: collecting required documents such as your degree and background check, securing sponsorship from a local school, and submitting your application to the Korean immigration authorities. Once approved, you will receive an E-2 visa that allows you to live and work legally in South Korea as an English teacher. This entire process will be facilitated by our trusted local provider, who will guide you through each stage and ensure that all paperwork is completed correctly and on time.

What Is not Included?

  • Courier costs
  • Transport costs
  • Utility bills
  • Meals
  • Accommodation during TESOL course (Accommodation facilitated)
  • Medical check-up, which is mandatory, costs approximately USD 100, and is coordinated by the school within the first week of arrival in Korea.

How can I get my TEFL funded through the Turing Scheme?

The Turing Scheme is a UK government initiative that provides funding for students to study and work abroad, offering a unique opportunity to gain international experience. Open to students at all levels—schools, colleges, universities, and vocational training—the scheme enables participants to enhance their skills, broaden their horizons, and boost employability.
